Interviews from the Second MSI Notebook "Love with the Wind" Charity Drive

For MSI Notebook's second "Love with the Wind" charity drive, 10 Digital Opportunity Centers (DOC) out of the 40 overseen by the Ministry of Education were chosen based on their performance for the donation of additional Wind U100 netbooks. The top 4 DOCs were also interviewed, providing a better picture of the gulf between the city and the countryside. Many families in remote townships for example don't have their own computer and even if they did, they might not have access to the Internet. The difficulties they had in accessing information provided a stark contrast to the well-developed IT infrastructure in the cities.

The educational challenges facing DOCs in remote townships were not limited to a shortage of equipment, primitive facilities or geographical isolation. Traditional ways of thought, grand-parenting and foreign brides all led to a passive attitude among local people. Despite the limited resources and staffing, DOC workers still did their utmost to promote the convenience and importance of the Internet to the general public and the community with passion and dedication.

The DOC workers were all very passionate about their jobs and very appreciative of MSI's efforts because the donated NBs allowed them to conduct community interviews, health checks, awareness programs, mobile classrooms and more. With the Wind U100 netbook, they now have a whole new level of mobility and portability….

"Love with the Wind" Brings More Love to Remote Areas

The global "Love with the Wind" charity program is one of the ways MSI Notebook expresses its commitment to corporate social responsibility as well as caring and contributing to the community. The program was launched with a donation of MSI Wind Netbook U100 notebooks to remote communities in support of the Ministry of Education and Executive Yuan's efforts to improve the standard of education and bridge the digital divide for these areas. These helped remote communities reach out and connect with the rest of the world and online resources in tangible ways.

After warming the hearts of many communities with the first round of donations, MSI Notebook recently announced a second round of "Love with the Wind" donations. Digital Opportunity Centers (DOC) that made outstanding use of their computers will now receive more MSI Wind Netbook U100 units to help bridge the digital divide even more.

Dabi Digital Opportunity Center – Let's Learn About Computers Together Hand-in-Hand

The Dabi DOC is located at Henan Village in Dabi Township, Yunlin County. Apart from offering fun computer camps, basic computer application classes and introductory classes to image editing for kids, the DOC also actively promotes IT education for nearby villages. Recently, the Dabi DOC joined with the other DOCs at Fangnan, Lunbei and Sihhu to launch the "Bridging the Digital Divide for Women Project" for women who live further away from the DOC. This involved transporting computers to the Shuelin Jingyang Temple to teach interested women and children computer basics.

Liu Bang-cin, the director of Dabi DOC, said: "The MSI Wid Netbook U100 donated by MSI Notebook has become one of most useful tools for extending our mobile teaching efforts to nearby villages."

As part of the "Bridging the Digital Divide for Women Project" that the Dabi DOC took part in, migrant mothers and their children came to learn about computers together. The children often help teach their mothers about computers as well.

Luye Digital Opportunity Center – Let Me Show You How to Use the Computer, Gran!

The Luye DOC is located in Luye Township, Taitung County. It is not only where children have fun learning about computers, it also has many senior citizens on the rolls as well. Once the kids learn how to use the computers, they often become teachers for the grannies and grandpas too!

Lin Ruei-yen, an assistant teacher at the Luye DOC, said: "The MSI Wind Netbook U100 donated by MSI Notebook is not only popular with the kids taking the computer classes but a great helper for teacher's mobile teaching efforts as well."
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY121
Every Wednesday and Friday the Luye DOC hosts after-school mentoring sessions for students. Here is a student working hard to learn how to use the U100.
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY122
The Luye DOC also has grannies among its students. When she saw how tiny the U100 was, the granny exclaimed: "A computer this tiny is so convenient! Show me how to use it!"
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY123
The children who already know how to use the computer immediately became young volunteers at the Luye DOC for teaching granny how to use the U100.
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY124
The students of the senior citizens class at the Luye DOC were very keen about learning how to use the U100.

This computer is so easy to use that even granny soon had it all figured out!

Caoling Digital Opportunity Center – U100 Saves the Day After Typhoon Sinlaku!

The Caoling DOC is located inside Caoling Elementary School. When Typhoon Sinlaku struck in September, landslides struck the area around the school, leading to 30 hectares of land being declared a high-risk zone. The Caoling DOC and the Caoling Elementary School were evacuated to private homes in Caoling Village but there was no time to move all the needed resources and the desktop computers at school. Most of the notebook computers at the school were old and obsolete as well. Huang Guo-ren, a teacher at Caoling Elementary School said: "Fortunately, MSI Notebook donated a MSI Wind Netbook to us. This allowed us to keep teaching the kids about computers during the typhoon. It also helped teachers with their work as well. This little notebook computer really saved the day for us!"
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY111
During Typhoon Sinlaku, the U100 allowed the children to continue taking their computer classes at the temporary school.
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY112
The teaching center rendered inaccessible after Typhoon Sinlaku in early September. Fortunately, the U100 notebook was available as a stopgap measure for handling the school's administrative tasks. Community teachers were able to use it with a single-lens projector to teach their classes as normal as well.
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY113
Last year teachers at the Caoling Elementary School began taking the students on outdoor excursions to experience the beauty of their hometown for themselves and also to develop vernacular courseware. In the beginning, the collected materials could not be processed immediately, as everything had to be photographed and then researched online back at school. After the U100 was donated to the Caoling DOC however, students can now immediately record observed species, locations and environments on the U100 to provide an immediate record of Caoling's ecological wonders.

Shuangci Digital Opportunity Center – Finally, Our Very Own Notebook Computer!

Shuangci DOC is located at the Zihyou Elementary School in Heping Township, Taichung County. There existed a very serious digital divide between the local indigenous village and the outside world. It was not until the DOC was established in 2007 that the local tribal villagers began to really learn about computers. The DOC also began offering classes on IT education and computer application for children as well as animation production for youths. When MSI Noteobook the MSI Wind Netbook U100 to the Shuangci DOC, it became their very first notebook computer.

Before the DOC was set up, only four households out of the thousand or so residents at Zihyou Village had a computer at home. These were all very old machines, so most people weren't in the habit of using computers either. Jiang Jhen-wun, the principal of Zihyou Elementary School, said: "For many years there was no IT education for the tribal communities, never mind the use of Internet resources. The outside world would be amazed by how wide the digital divide between the city and the countryside was."

"The MSI Wind Netbook U100 donated by MSI Notebook is now the first and only notebook computer at the Shuangci DOC," Said Principal Jiang. "It has also brought more convenient and more modern computer applications to the DOC."
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY101
The Shuangci DOC offers after-school daycare for students from the tribal community on weekdays. Here a volunteer is teaching the children how to use the U100.
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY102
The U100 has not only helped Shuangci DOC with promoting computer education but also allowed the students at Zihyou Elementary School to connect to the school's wireless network and integrate IT into their teaching as well.
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY103
When the tribal villagers saw how light and compact the U100 was, they were amazed by how convenient miniaturized computer products are nowadays.

Jiji Digital Opportunity Center – Students Love the Convenient and Practical Notebook!

The Jiji DOC used the MSI Wind Netbook U100 donated by MSI Notebook to play its presentations at briefings and compiling everyday paperwork. When outdoor photo excursions are held for the digital photography class, it also allows students to immediately see the results and pick out any effects. All the students were very impressed by how convenient and practical it was, and how well it satisfied their thirst for knowledge.

"In the past, I had to go around looking for a computer to borrow when visiting community schools for promotional events. Now I finally have a notebook to use." Said Lin A-e, a worker at the Jiji DOC. "The MSI Wind Netbook U100 has made quite an impact on the local area. It not only showed the people living in remote areas that modern IT technology has become so accessible but it also gave them the chance to see how convenient IT services are in urban areas."

MSI Cares: Notebooks for Charity

For leading international computer and IT vendor MSI, Taiwan is its birthplace and where it grew up. In keeping with its philosophy of "Beautiful Life, Green Home", MSI not only develops environmentally friendly strategies to protect planet Earth but is also committed to giving back to the Taiwanese community. In October 2008, the "MSI Cares: Notebooks for Charity" Digital Dream Project donation ceremony was hosted at the MSI head office. 27 MSI Love Edition notebooks in a variety of models were donated to disadvantaged children throughout Taiwan in an effort to use MSI's technological expertise to help realize the digital dreams of more needy kids. MSI also hoped that the move would encourage other enterprises to respond to this meaningful charity program as well.
DisadvantageMSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY61d families in Taiwan living on the edge of poverty have mostly keenly felt the effect of the global economic recession. The lack of living and education resources has seen many children denied better learning resources and opportunities during their golden years, limiting their future development and skills. In response, the Taipei County Government and various charities recently started the Dream Project to help disadvantaged families. MSI knows that there are now many disadvantaged families in Taiwan that urgently need help and support. At the direction of company chairman Joseph Hsu, MSI reached out to organizations such as the Social Affairs Bureau of Taipei County and donated 27 Love notebooks. Recipients included the "Social Affairs Bureau of Taipei County", the "Chinese Youth Peace Corps", The Child Growth Association of the R.O.C", the "Hualien County Parents Association of Autism" and the "Pingtung Luotengyuan Garden Association for the Physically Handicapped ". These donations will hopefully offer disadvantaged children the chance to escape from poverty through digital learning.
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY62
The donation ceremony was held at MSI's head office in Jhonghe on October 8 with Manager Jhih-Jhuang Chang of MSI's Public Relations Department as the company's representative. During the ceremony, he said: "This is an example of how MSI under the leadership of chairman Hsu gives back to the community. We hope this embodiment of corporate social responsibility will not only show our company's support for disadvantaged groups but also support the government's environmental and carbon reduction initiatives so everything can live up to their true potential. At the same time, MSI commits itself to further social welfare and charitable activities in the future." After the ceremony, Chairman Hsu also said: "MSI is a home-grown Taiwanese enterprise so helping disadvantaged groups in Taiwan is a priority for us. In the future, we will invest more resources in this area to reduce the digital divide in education throughout Taiwan. This will let even disadvantaged kids learn computer skills and cultivate their creativity." In recent years, MSI has placed a strong emphasis on giving back to the Taiwanese community and becoming a good corporate citizen. It will continue to take an active role in charitable activities in the future. MSI also frequently reminds its employees of the need to show gratitude and compassion. Charity begins at home so every MSI employee should contribute to society by actively reaching out to and helping disadvantaged groups.

MSI Notebook Launches Charity on Campus Initiative

Recently, MSI Notebook chose to express an emphasis on humanities, technology and fashion in its corporate culture by providing assistance for students in need. The official launch of the 2008 MSI Wind Netbook U100 Charity in Campus initiative was combined with the increasing popularity of school sports and the Olympic spirit. Charitable school grants and self-development through sports and constant improvement are the elements of this school assistance campaign. All men and women's volleyball teams that win the crown in Division A of the University Volleyball Series and the Super Series will win a Wind Netbook U100, donated by MSI, for their school's work-study center.
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY51
The sport of volleyball has always been more than just a sport in China. Starting from the 1981 World Cup, the winning of five successive gold medals by the women's volleyball team has set an example for generations of Chinese people. Volleyball therefore has a special place in the hearts of all Chinese people.
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY52
The new initiative was to a certain extent influenced by the strong student interest in the 2008~2009 university volleyball series because of the excellent environment it generated for cultivating top Chinese volleyball and sports talents. The partnership between the China University Volleyball Association and MSI Notebook, the sole official notebook computer sponsor, will help stimulate students to embrace a volleyball and entertainment culture. This will serve as an example of how competitive sports and cultural entertainment can be successfully combined.
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY53
The China University Volleyball Series will also become the largest, the most challenging, and most influential tertiary volleyball tournament in China. As MSI Notebook continues to devote itself to promoting charity on campus, it will also bring even more highly cost-effective notebook products to even more student users.
MSI NOTEBOOK GLOBAL CHARITY54
The current MSI Netbook Wind U100 Charity on Campus initiative will run for 6 months and will offer opportunities for schools from around the country to receive charitable assistance. This will, in turn, convey MSI's interest in welfare to all users interested in MSI notebook developments.
