Shuangci DOC is located at the Zihyou Elementary School in Heping Township, Taichung County. There existed a very serious digital divide between the local indigenous village and the outside world. It was not until the DOC was established in 2007 that the local tribal villagers began to really learn about computers. The DOC also began offering classes on IT education and computer application for children as well as animation production for youths. When MSI Noteobook the MSI Wind Netbook U100 to the Shuangci DOC, it became their very first notebook computer.
Before the DOC was set up, only four households out of the thousand or so residents at Zihyou Village had a computer at home. These were all very old machines, so most people weren't in the habit of using computers either. Jiang Jhen-wun, the principal of Zihyou Elementary School, said: "For many years there was no IT education for the tribal communities, never mind the use of Internet resources. The outside world would be amazed by how wide the digital divide between the city and the countryside was."
"The MSI Wind Netbook U100 donated by MSI Notebook is now the first and only notebook computer at the Shuangci DOC," Said Principal Jiang. "It has also brought more convenient and more modern computer applications to the DOC."
The Shuangci DOC offers after-school daycare for students from the tribal community on weekdays. Here a volunteer is teaching the children how to use the U100.
The U100 has not only helped Shuangci DOC with promoting computer education but also allowed the students at Zihyou Elementary School to connect to the school's wireless network and integrate IT into their teaching as well.
When the tribal villagers saw how light and compact the U100 was, they were amazed by how convenient miniaturized computer products are nowadays.
